Progress Blog: A corner in hong kong

This project aims to capture the essence and spirit of Hong Kong in one corner out of a million. Deeply inspirited by the architectures, lights and people in Hong Kong.

Lighting and render test in cinema 4D

After I did 60% of the modeling in the scene, I decided to test out the default renderer in Cinema 4D since I now have no access to both arnold and redshift from school.

I added internal and external glow to the neon geometry. Used fog to create atmospheric volume and created an old Hong Kong vibe. I am currently figuring out how to get rid of noise and to get that neon effect nailed down.

Moving forward, I will work on animation and minor models.

To create this neon sign, I first planned out my modeling strategy with simple polygons. For the text, I used MoText in Cinema 4D. After I nailed down the layout, I used Spline Pen to create a guide which then a geometry will be wrapped on. In the progress of drawing splines, I had to keep in mind that its better to avoid harsh angles.

To tackle harsh and tight angles, I used the Chamfer tool to give some corners a smooth look. After the spline, a cylinder is wrapped and parented to the spline for each splines I created for each element which was done using the Spline Wrap deformer
